WOW 012 – Think you Can

Written by:

So this is a quote I also remember from my 8th grade classroom wall. I loved it then and still love it because as simple as it is it is also very profound. It doesn’t have any hidden meaning, at least not that I’m aware of. It simply means what it says.

If you think you can then you can. It might take practice or a course to learn what you want to do but ultimately if you believe you can and you want it bad enough then, yes, you can.

Likewise, if you think you can’t then you can’t. It doesn’t matter if you possess all the skills, money, connections etc. that you need to do something. If you don’t think you can, you won’t likely even try. If you give a half-hearted attempt you’ll make sure you fail.

In my life, this is something I need to contemplate. There are things my body won’t let me do, or at least if I do the task I end up in extreme pain. So if I can convince myself that I CAN do it does that mean there won’t be pain? No, of course not. But if I believe I can then I will find a way to do it so it is less painful.

I was fortunate to grow up with parents who taught me that I could do anything I set my mind to. And, for the most part, that is true. I’ve done many different things in my life. Some I did well, others not so much but I proved I can do it if I believe I can and try hard.

Maybe you weren’t so blessed but that doesn’t mean this quote isn’t true for you too. Like someone once said (the source is uncertain) “Success comes in Cans, not in Cannots.” So tell yourself you can! Learn something new if that’s what it takes. And get out there and succeed!

What is it that you tell yourself you can’t do? Is there a way you could turn that into a ‘CAN’? Tell me in the comments. If you still believe you can’t then tell me what it is you think you can’t and we’ll see if we can come up with a way to make a CAN! Let’s have a conversation….

Thanks Stella! That’s another great quote on the same topic “Where there’s a will there’s a way”. I agree that you’re never too old. I think by actively trying to learn something new at any age it helps us to live a longer happier life.

Love this post, and I love the quote! I have actually never heard the quote, but I’m a fan already.
I used to be bad at telling myself I cant. Unless someone else told me I cant, then I always made a point to prove them wrong! Why I couldn’t do the same for my own personal thoughts for so long, who knows. But I have been getting a lot better in putting more trust in myself and finally taking chances and starting things I always wanted to do, but always had an excuse as to why “I cant”. Because, truth is. I can! I just need to find the way that works for me to do it! 🙂

I’m glad I was able to enlighten you with this quote! It’s great that you are self-aware and interested in choosing a more positive path. I love your last line, that’s exactly what I have to do all the time, find a way that works for me. Best of luck! It applies in many situations.

It has taken me quite a while (and I’m still working on it) to not compare myself to others. Everyone’s life is different. Body types are different. Skill sets are different.
There has been too many times I have compared myself to others. For example: Why cant I run as fast or as long as that person. They started running for the first time when I started.
I had to stop trying to compete with others and just focus on competing with myself. Being better than I was yesterday 🙂

You’re right on there Simply Put, the only person we should ever compare ourselves to is ourselves. Everyone is different and we don’t know what another person has been through. Often people with invisible illness can’t keep up with others for very good reason, you just can’t see it.

oh so many directions to go with this…I wamt to do a lot, and am running out of time (I’m 65, so freestyle skiing looks like fun, but, well, I don’t want to die)…but that quote is right, you have to have that dream, and work really hard, and anything is possible…..could I be the new Eric Clapton?

What wonderful positivity Warren. Like you, there are things that used to be on my ‘bucket list’ that I know would not be wise to do now. With a very degenerative back and osteoarthritis in all my major joints doing a zip-line probably isn’t a good idea no matter how much I try to convince myself that I CAN.

Sometimes we need to find something similar that we can still enjoy. For example, I love carnival rides but because of my back I don’t dare go on them anymore. However the Ferris wheel is a pretty tame ride and something I would enjoy doing again. Maybe you would enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. I wish you all the best in whatever you do.

One of the best quotes ever although Henry Ford was somewhat muddled in some of his other writings.

I’m one of those people who suffers from an irritating lack of self-confidence, but I know that if I get to the end of my life, and I haven’t done anything with the time I’ve had, that’s all on me. The bullies and the naysayers have no vested interest in my success or failure, and so their opinions are absolutely inconsequential. What I want to get done, I need to do.

Yes Beth, you are absolutely right. Your success is about what you do, not anyone else’s opinion. If you are happy with your progress that’s what really matters. Best of luck with whatever you do.

I resonate with the power of positive thinking expressed in your article. It’s a great reminder that our mindset plays a crucial role in our achievements. Even when faced with physical limitations, believing in our abilities can open up new possibilities and creative solutions. Thanks for sharing this motivational perspective!

Thank you so much for your comment Rachelle! Many people with severe limitations do big things because of having a ‘can do’ attitude. Helen Keller comes to mind.
