The Amazing Power of Positive Posture

Written by:

I’ve heard and read lots of information about body language regarding reading other people. What if you could change your mood or disposition with your own body language? Make yourself feel happier, more confident, and more powerful. You can and I’m going to give you some tips on how to do just that.

It is incredible the power of a smile. Did you know that making yourself smile, even if you feel sad, can make you actually feel happier? Try holding a pencil horizontally between your teeth to force a smile if you just can’t muster one up on your own.

Smiling slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure and releases endorphins that help to make you feel less stressed. Plus other people are more open to you when you approach with a smile on your face.

Try to avoid crossing your arms, slouching and fidgeting all of which portray insecurity, discomfort and anxiety. When you catch yourself doing these things release your crossed arms, stand up straight and stop fidgeting. You will feel and appear to others to be more comfortable in your surroundings and open to being approached.

Touching your neck and face is a dead give-away that you are feeling anxious so take a deep breath, smile and stand up tall. You’ll feel better about yourself and others won’t have a clue that you might have been anxious at all.

I have struggled with this one alot in my life and had to learn to consciously stop fidgeting and touching my neck. I must have done okay at it since I worked with the public and was told numerous times how I was so approachable and friendly.

Not only does standing up straight and tall open your airways and allow all your organs to work correctly it makes you feel more confident and self-assured. Proper posture is important for your overall health and can lead others to conclude that you are calm, cool and collected

You may have heard about power poses for increasing confidence. Studies have been done and they proved that it works. Not to say it would remove all your insecurities and make you feel confident forever but it can help when you have to face something stressful like a job interview or meeting with the boss.

What you do is stand up tall with your chest out and your hands on your hips. Some call it the ‘Superhero pose’ or ‘Wonder Woman pose’. Regardless of what you call it just hold this posture for two full minutes and you should notice a difference in how confident you feel. The studies found that it raised the subjects’ testosterone (the power hormone) and lowered cortisol (the stress chemical).

I tried this pose myself and did find I felt more powerful and self-assured. It felt a little silly at first but being at home alone at least I didn’t have any witnesses. LOL

In conclusion, using body language to project a positive mindset can be a powerful tool to make you feel happier, more confident, and better prepared to tackle any challenge. Correct posture not only exhibits confidence to others but also gives off chemical signals to our brains that can help us become our best selves.

As the quote from the Dalai Lama goes, “Your body posture shapes your emotions.” By making a conscious effort to improve your posture, you can take purposeful steps toward feeling more confident and optimistic. Let’s empower ourselves to stand tall, assert ourselves, and achieve success.

Have you tried any of these postures? Tell me in the comments about your experience and whether it helped you or not. Thanks for reading. Have a wonderful day!
