He is Richest who is content with the least.
- Socrates
We post now and then about ways to save money or make more money and also about minimizing and decluttering. Then there are the topics of happiness and the benefits of nature. But what is true wealth?
According to Socrates, if we expand on the quote, what he said was “He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.” It seems he wasn’t just saying that those with fewer possessions are richest but those who can find the wealth of nature.
In my experience, these two things go hand in hand. As I have minimized my possessions over the years I find I take more notice of nature and all it has to offer. I find peace and happiness in sitting outside listening to the birds or watching chipmunks and squirrels eating seeds I put out for them. I am content!
This isn’t to say that seeking wealth is an altogether bad thing or that you’ll never find contentment at the same time. I think, for me, one can strive for success AND find contentment in nature if you find the right balance.
As the old saying goes ‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.’ Not only dull, in my opinion, but unhappy and probably very stressed out. We need to find balance between work and free time and I believe we can have it all… if that’s what you want.
Myself I am just fine with owning less, owing less (nothing), and maybe not going gung-ho for wealth and success. I feel my life is already successful. I’ve raised 4 wonderful children to adulthood, had a couple of very satisfying careers, I’m married to someone I love and respect (as he does me) and we are debt free with our own home and a cottage. What more could I want?
Sure we don’t take exotic vacations or drive a red convertible but those aren’t on my ‘want’ list anyway. I have enough and each day is a new day to do whatever my heart desires. Which is usually pretty simple stuff like crocheting things for my coming granddaughter, visiting with family, writing and doing artwork. As far as I’m concerned I’m one of the richest people I know.
How about you? Are you happy with what you have? Do you always want more and never feel you have enough? What is one thing you could change to make your life richer? Let’s chat in the comments about it.
