Do you sometimes run into a situation where you have to make a decision on something and you just don’t know what to do. Well if you do, it’s quite common.
So how are you going to choose? Sometimes it’s scary because it can be a risk, especially if it’s a really important one. Like taking a course, moving, changing jobs, taking on a new hobby or skill that will require some investment on your part. Well, with those tougher decisions, try thinking from a different perspective.
The first thing a person would do, and you likely already thought of this one, is weigh the pros and cons of whatever it is you’re thinking about. Write down all the benefits of taking this action. Also write down any worst case scenerios of what could happen if you decided to take on this activity or task. Even though most people think to make that list, sometimes it helps if you reverse the question. In other words, ask yourself ‘If I opt out, what are the benefits or pros and of course what are the negatives, or cons if I choose not to do it. What would I lose out on’.

To help with creating your pros and cons list try pretending it’s already decided, and it’s now 5 or 10 years later. Because you chose not to do it what are some potential opportunities you missed out on? Don’t forget the reverse. Because you did go for it, what did you gain, or what oppurtunities could it have opened? Also think with both perspectives, how would your life change compared to how it is now?
Perhaps thinking of the new change isn’t getting you anywhere. Well then, instead of thinking about the new idea, think about your current situation. Imagine if you could go back in time, say five or ten years, or just before your current situation came about. With everything you know now in the present you go back and talk to yourself just before your younger self heads in the direction that leads to where you are today. Would you tell yourself to go ahead, ‘It can be difficult but definitely worth it’? Or would you tell your younger self ‘Whatever you do, do not take that action, or take on this activity, or waste your time looking into such and such? You will regret it later on’. This thought process may help you to appreciate what you have, or it might give you the encouragement you need to go ahead and take the risk to change.
