Look outward and see the world around you. Not through pictures on Instagram or Facebook but in the real world. Go out for a walk and take in the beauty of nature, architecture, people, and animals. There is so much in this world to make you smile and brighten your day and it’s so much better if you see it in person.

Take some time each day to write – journal your thoughts, feelings, plans, and dreams. Not just your daytime dreams for the future but write down the dreams you have at night. I believe they can tell us a lot about what’s going on in our subconscious if we really pay attention.

Read a real book. We are so attached to our electronic devices that we forget there are other ways to entertain our minds. Play a real card or board game with your friends, do crossword puzzles in the newspaper, or draw pictures. There is so much you could be doing that will enrich your life rather than just fill time.

Accept the things you can’t change. Don’t waste mental energy worrying about things that are out of your control. Focus on what you can control such as your attitude, behavior, and what you think.

Make notes, write lists, make doodles, or take photos. Whatever way you can record information that may be useful later. Whether it’s a list of things you need to do, the names of the new people you just met, or how to operate that new doodad you bought. We always think we’ll remember but take it from me, we usually don’t.

Be yourself! Don’t pretend for the sake of others but be confident in who you are. Be honest with everyone, especially yourself.

Gratitude is a must. Show gratitude to those around you when they do anything for you or just for being there for you. Keep a gratitude journal. Start or end your day with a grateful heart and you will surely sleep better at night and/or have a better, more positive day.

Be kind. Show compassion to those around you thinking of them before yourself. Make a point of saying something nice or giving a compliment to someone every day.
