The Ultimate Guide To Morning Routines

Written by:

Get your day started right

Everywhere I look I see articles about how important a morning routine is. Apparently, all the super successful people have one. Does that mean I’ll be more successful if I create a morning routine? It certainly won’t hurt and it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time. So, if you’re like me and still don’t have a good routine to start your day let’s do this together.

I’ve been doing some research and have some great information to share with you. I was happy to find that you don’t have to get up super early to have a good day. Your morning routine can start whenever you wake up.

If you're going to rise you might as well shine

Starting your day

As for me, I don’t need to set an alarm anymore so I just get up when my body tells me to. Unfortunately, that’s usually between 3:30 and 5 am. I used to sleep in late but as I get older I seem to wake up earlier and earlier. But you do you. If you don’t need to get up at a certain time then don’t set an alarm. Let your body determine when you get up.

Lots of successful people start their days in different ways but there are a few common elements. Most take some time for quiet reflection whether that be meditation, prayer, journaling, or something else. This would be a good time to express gratitude through a gratitude journal or by just jotting on a piece of paper 3 things you’re grateful for.

Love yourself enough to eat a healthy breakfast.

Take care of your body

Breakfast is important too. You need to break the fast and fuel your body for the morning. Think ‘nutritious breakfast‘ not toaster pastries and coffee though coffee or tea can be part of your meal. I don’t think I’d make any friends by suggesting you give up coffee. For many people, myself included, coffee is what really wakes me up every day. So it stays in my routine for sure.

Another thing most successful people do is some form of exercise. Some jog, do yoga, play basketball or walk, though any kind of movement is good. This is where I start having a problem. I can’t do a lot of those things. I have Fibromyalgia and a couple of chronic pain conditions

Getting up out of bed is an ordeal and walking to the bathroom is a struggle made possible only with a cane. I’ve been thinking about it and decided I need to look up videos on Chair Yoga. I’m sure I could manage that. It’s the only part of a good morning routine that I couldn’t previously figure out.

There’s also the personal hygiene stuff. Brush your teeth, wash your face, and maybe a shower or bath unless you prefer to do that at night. Then you need to get dressed for the day. Even if you’re working from home getting dressed can make you feel more like working. Maybe your WFH clothes will be different from office clothes, more comfortable and casual, as long as you get dressed.

The 6 steps to success

There I think we’ve covered all the crucial elements.

  1. Time for quiet reflection
  2. Breakfast
  3. Get moving
  4. Personal Hygiene
  5. Clothes

Just one last item to add to this list.

  1. Go over what you want to accomplish today. Maybe you write a to-do list or just jot a couple of items on a piece of paper. Or maybe you are super organized with a daily planner app on your phone. It’s not important how you do it just make some sort of plan for your day. What’s the saying “If you fail to plan then plan to fail.”?
The secret to your success lies in your daily routine.

Let’s make it happen!

I’ve had great morning routines in the past. When I was working and raising children I had to or I’d lose my mind. I miss those mornings of sitting in my chair, reading my daily devotional, and journaling when there was no one up except me and the sun. Now that I’m not working there is no urgency to do anything first thing in the morning.

However, I know a good morning routine can set the mood for your day. It’s good for your mental and physical health. For myself, I think it would also give me a sense of purpose for the day.

A simple truth? We'll never have today again.

So now we have a sort of formula for a good morning routine. You can do the items in whatever order works for you. It’s meant to be flexible but it’s important to be consistent. I’ll probably start with just a few things at first and bring it all together over time. I know I can do it and I know I’ll be glad that I did.

How about you? Do you have a good morning routine? If not do you plan to start one? Tell me about it in the comments. We might be able to help each other.

Quiet reflection and exercise is such a great way to start the day. And it’s even better when you wake up early and have all that time to yourself before all the day’s events fight for your attention. Anyway, thanks for this post!

I like your morning routine suggestions. I still get up super early because I meditate before starting my day. And I love the quiet time, hopefully outdoors, drinking coffee, journaling, and reading. I love walking so that’s my exercise of choice. Thanks for the post.
