February calendar month is most known for…

Written by:

The February Calendar is most commonly known to the love birds, and romantics as the month for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is on the 14th of the month. Leading up to it many people make big plans for spending time with someone they love and cherish in their life. Doing things like a dinner for two, a bottle of wine, some chocolates and roses. It is a time when many couples coo and cuddle with each other expressing how much they care for one another and how special they are. A very romantic time spent bonding.

The groundhog gets a little love during the February Calendar as well. On the 2nd of February, a lot of people were curious about whether or not the groundhog would come out of its hole. The story goes that if the groundhog comes out and sees his shadow winter will be 6 more weeks. However, if he does not see his shadow spring will be early. You are likely wondering if this is all true or not. Well, you’ll have to find a groundhog, watch, and observe, then come back and let us know in the comments if it’s really true or not.

Whether spring comes early or not according to the groundhog I can tell you for certain this: the February Calendar month will end early. February is known for being the shortest month of the year because it only has 28 days. During a leap year, it will try to catch up with the other 11 months but still falls short cause it still only gets to be 29 days during those years.

The February calendar gets its name from the Latin word februa. The word februa when translated means ” to cleanse”. Way back in Roman times there was a festival that took place around the same time every year called Februalia. This was the festival of atonement and purification. So the Romans called this month Februarius in honour of the Februalia celebration.

When it comes to monthly Gem stones, which can also be referred to as Birthstones, there are two common lists: Modern and Traditional. For a majority of Birthstones they are the same, however some months do have a different stone and a few actually have more than two different birthstones associated with them.

The reason why I refer to the list with the word common is because of the vastness of our world and its history. For example, ancient Romans and Greeks had various birthstone lists due to region, astrology, or religious beliefs. There is more than one type of list. For example, one list is the gems used in a breastplate mentioned in the bible in the book of Exodus. Another list would be an astrological or zodiac list associated more with a range of dates and star alignment.

The list of birthstones that many are more familiar with today is what some may call a jewelers list. The traditional also known as ancient birthstones list came about in Poland around the 17th century. The modern list that many jewelers use was established in the United Kingdom in 1912. The key difference between the traditional and modern is that the modern ones are more transparent and similarly shaped in comparison to each other. Making it easier to set more than one in a ring as well as other types of jewelry.

Here is a list of both traditional and modern gems associated with the months of the year used by many jewelers today.

February birthstone for both modern & traditional is the amethyst

THE AMETHYST BIRTHSTONE

The amethyst gem ranges from a pretty, light lilac to a beautiful deep purple. It is a very strong quartz that is highly resistant to scratches.

IT’S BEAUTY

It’s a crystalline quartz that is purple ranging from very light to deep. The deep vibrant reddish purple shade is considered to be the most desirable by many.

SYMBOLIC MEANING

The amethyst symbolizes a clear mind, healing, and spiritualism. The color being purple has long been associated with royalty and favored by the upper class of society in many cultures through the centuries.

So if you are more familiar with a different birthstone list in your culture, society, or heritage. Feel free to let us know in the comments.

Great post, I learned something new! Thank you for that! February is a awesome month… The coldest here in NL, and we usually get a lot of snow, but I don’t mind that.

Morning! I know a lot of people hate the snow. For me, it is a mindset. I grew up in NL and we always have a lot of snow in winter and I got used to it. It isn’t going anywhere so might as well find some joy out of it!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

I understand Joanne. I had an aunt whose birthday was Feb 14th so to me a birthday trumps Valentine’s day. You and Tim can express your love any time. Happy birthday to your daughter and wishing you a peace filled day.

She just turned 37 and thankfully she is only 30 second walk from my house at the most, yes she lives that close to us

That’s wonderful that she lives so close. Mine are all in their 30’s as well but they don’t live so close. One is in the same city, the others are an hours drive and more. Have a great day Joanne!

Thanks Miranda, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the posts and the word search. I’m sorry you weren’t able to find all the words. I’ve checked the puzzle and can tell you the word calendar is in there – backwards on a durations. Unfortunately it seems februa is only there as a part of the word february and amethyst doesn’t appear to be there at all. My apologies. I’ll check the answer key before posting the next one. Happy Valentine’s day!

Oh really? Haha, I thought that might be where Februa was hiding. 😀 Wordsearches are elusive, there’s usually at least one word I cannot find. I thought I’d take a break and try again later with fresh eyes. 😀
