WOW 016 – Wisely and Slowly

Written by:

When I see these words from William Shakespeare I have to think it could easily be my motto for life. Much like the story of the tortoise and the hare, we are told to go slowly, take our time, and work smarter, not harder and our goals will be within our reach.

Before my back injury, I didn’t know how to go slowly. I rushed into projects, going ‘gung-ho’ as Razz says. Doing things this way I would quickly burn out and leave whatever project I was working on partially finished. Often never returning to it. Hurting my back certainly changed things. Slowly is the only way I can do anything now.

That’s not to say I never finished anything. There are always those things that life forces you to go slowly on. Like when I decided to open my own daycare in my home. I was already watching other people’s children but I wanted to be considered more seriously; more professional.

I set to work finding out what I needed to do. Once you start writing up business plans and getting the proper training and licenses it takes time. I would often have to wait anxiously for a call back from someone or to have something approved. The licensing people came to my home and recommended some changes which I had to do, get approved and get inspected again.

There was no way to go ‘gung-ho’ on this project and it was completed. My goal since I was a child had come to life and I was ecstatic.

Do you set goals, break them down into small bite-sized pieces and work on them slowly and wisely? I really believe more gets done this way. It is the underlying concept at RazzWorks. Go slowly, go wisely so you can keep on going and keep on growing.

If you can relate please leave a comment and tell me how this quote works or doesn’t work for you. Have an amazing day!

Slow and steady is the way to go through life, more so when you have a risk of falling which I do. Me set goals, nope, I just go with the flow.

Hi Joanne, good to see you again. Sorry to everyone for my late replies but we were at our cottage for a few days and have no internet there. I’m with you on the risk of falling. I need to go slow just so I can continue moving. I’ve had to learn a whole new way of living these last 14 years or so. Have a beautiful Sunday!

I always set goals, but usually I never get even close to them. It’s not that I’ve set to high of goals either. Life just “get’s in the way” and I never get there, no matter how much I struggle. Even if I do the things in the right way, I lose in the end. Let’s hope that will not be true for once, because one of the biggest goals is to get a job as a web developer. With my current internship it can finally happen, but who knows?

The market sucks for people like me, those “without experience”, but I’m hoping it will turn around soon if the interests rate go down and same with inflation.

I understand your frustration AM. Sometimes things just aren’t in the cards for us and we need to try a new path, but don’t give up. I hope you make it as a web developer, its a very interesting career to me. I worked in software analysis and it took alot of perseverance to get there. 2 years of college and then, as you stated, starting with no experience.

I lucked out and found a new(ish) company that was interested in new graduates. As they said, they don’t have to break us of bad habits from previous workplaces. They were willing to train and eager to teach us the way they wanted things done. I was with them for just 5 years before my disability. Good luck and don’t give up. I had to call them monthly for a year before I got hired.

I’m glad it worked out well for you there. Hopefully a gig will happen for me soon too.

Slow and steady is the way. Sometimes though rushing, having no plans is how we managed it in childhood…, so it’s hard to go about it differently…

It sure can be hard to change old habits! If you were never taught to have good goal-setting habits you might need to start with something really small and easy. I like to use habit pairings. I take something I do every day and tack a new, small habit onto it. i.e. after getting dressed every day I then automatically brush my teeth, or every day after I eat lunch then I go for a 20 minute walk. I’m sure its not new information but for me its the only way I can start something new. Wishing you a happy week!

I’ve learned to follow my intuition rather than always doing what others consider to be prudent. The inner voice usually knows best. I’m not a goal-setter. I figure out what I want and let my inner guidance take the lead. This is an interesting topic for me right now, though, since my hub and I are currently licking our wounds after losing out on a property we wanted because one of us wanted to deliberate longer and couldn’t pull the trigger (kicking himself now for being “slow and steady”). There is a time to act fast. 🙂

Oh Camilla, I’m sorry to hear you missed out on that property. I know the feeling. It’s good to take your time and make a good decision but, yes, there are certain scenarios where time is important. The way I look at losses like that is something a realtor told me once when house hunting. “If you don’t get it then that’s not the house for you. There’s something better to come.” I hope a better property comes up for you. Good Luck!

I believe that, too! “What’s yours finds you.” My fantasy life took a hit from that one and needs to regroup, LOL! The rest of my life is still fine! 😆

‘Less haste, more speed’ is a saying that I find is very good advice in many walks of life and a variety of contexts.

Yes Kevin I like that one too. Reminds me of hearing someone on TV once say “The hurrier I go the behinder I get.” All just more ways to emphasize the same thing, I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Hi again Stephen. Spring is well underway here though we still have some chilly days broken up with summer-like heat. Today is cool and raining. You have some very pretty and unusual flowers there. Have a lovely Sunday!
