We’re getting comments, are you?

Written by:

We recently noticed that our comment section indicates we have 1k comments. Mind you we (Roze and I) also noticed in a different section it says we have a little over 700 comments. Not sure what the different numbers mean. However, if the comment section means we have a total of 1000 including both comments received and replies to the comments then our replies would account for about half that number. Therefore, I feel it is safe to guess it means we received close to or over 500 comments from other people. I think that is awesome. So thank you to everyone who has visited, read, and left us a comment here at RazzWorks.

Sometimes while blog hopping (Blog Hopping – travelling around to different websites looking for interesting articles to read), we notice that some people don’t get comments. Now, there can be many reasons why people don’t leave comments. Here are some basic things to check into that might be causing comments to not show up under your post.

1 The comment section is permanently closed.
2 The comment section closes after a certain # of days.
3 There are comments however they are not visible yet.

Now, just in case maybe you’re someone who would like to get comments however you don’t seem to be getting any do a quick search on how to check your commenting settings for your theme and/or host. ( Host – refers to the company that your site is associated with. Example: WordPress, Medium, Blogspot, etc…) ( Theme – A premade format or layout of your website’s look which usually has settings for you to be able to make changes.) And make sure you have comments set to be allowed or turned on.

If it turns out that, yes, comments are turned on, and not set to close after a certain amount of time. Then check your comment section to see if any comments might be pending. For example, in WordPress, it is possible to set comments to hold any first-timer comments for moderation. What that means is the first time a person leaves a comment it automatically goes to pending until the owner of the site reads and approves it.

One last thing to check. Maybe you are getting comments however the comments are going to spam. Check the spam section. It’s not uncommon for a perfectly fine comment to end up in spam. Just go into the spam folder and click approve on any legitimate comments in there.

I share this information with you only because here at RazzWorks we had the same problem in the first year. And the way I look at it. is, if I didn’t know, then perhaps there are others out there that might not realize it either.

I’m getting loads and loads of comments and I’m mindblown about that. With my former blogs, I maybe got 200 in total – spread out over 15 years of blogging!

Now I have about 1500, maybe more, half of those are mine of course since I reply to basically every comment. I’m so happy about that!

That’s wonderful AM! I’m so glad you are seeing so many comments. Are you doing anything special to recruit viewers, like networking? We find that makes a world of difference in the amount of comments we get.

Well, yes and no. I follow a couple of bloggers here and they are the ones who comment the most.

Otherwise I just write good stuff and people keep coming.

Good tips. I would also add that some of the templates WP offers do not support a comment section. The first template I used did not, so I had to switch to a different one.

That’s good to know Kevin. I had no idea. I have run across sites on WordPress that don’t have a comment section but I always assumed they had just shut it off. Thanks for the info.

I check both like you suggested also, do you get mindless likes? You know like someone instantly liking about 20 of your posts when it’s obvious by the length of your post they haven’t read it just hit the like button kind of for the sake of it 10 seconds after you’ve posted but it’s like 2000+ words?

Yes cazzy we have noticed this and figure it must be done through the reader as this is the only way they could do so many likes so fast. It’s kind of annoying as I’d much rather get fewer likes but know that a person was there long enough to read the post. I’m sure they are trying to help by increasing our stats but I’d still prefer to have real readers. I don’t really think there is any way to stop this though. What do you think?

I think you are right I read a post then decide if I like it or don’t like it and if I don’t I like it to prove I’ve read it then comment on it. Sometimes I never know what to put but really want to comment

Thank you for the info! 🌞 As a newbie I was getting lots of comments that went into my spam folder and it took me some time to realize… I always check it now, first thing!

Great to see you Stella and good to hear you figured that out. I still forget to check the spam folder sometimes. And I don’t always see the logic of why they end up in there. So far I have noticed three things – a comment with a link in it, a comment that is only emojis and really ling comments though the latter two don’t always go to spam. No idea why some do.

Thanks for sharing this post. I was reminded to give my readers an option at the bottom. I was wondering why I was not getting comments. In all fairness, this may be only one reason.

Yes there may well be more than one reason but a call to action at the end of your post with a question to your readers might get more coming in. We try to do this as often as we can.

I get comments on all three of my blogs, not a lot of comments but that doesn’t bother me but it does feel good when we can see that our posts are read and that some takes the time to comment.

I agree Joanne. That’s the best part of comments coming in; knowing you’ve been seen and read and enjoyed by others. It really does help to keep one motivated.

That’s one of the things I love about this WordPress – the ability to communicate with other bloggers. I’ve learned some very valuable techniques from my fellow bloggers. If you ever have questions feel free to ask me. I’m no expert but I’ll try to help.

weird thing, but lots of comments were in my spam section, were they all?…..I try to comment when I can, or feel complelled to, I won’t just comment to just comment….if I ask for a comment, that sometimes works…and I have to say, there are some Blogs I just like commenting to keep that connection because I guess I value that blog

I understand your viewpoint Warren. If that’s what works for you then by all means continue. We each need to find a plan that works for us. Honestly I forgot to check my spam folder this week and found about 10 comments in there, though only a couple were genuine – not trying to sell me something or only inviting me to check out their blog. I only respond to genuine comments. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Yes Joseph that can happen. Usually, if it’s your first time commenting on a site, it goes to pending for moderation by the site owner or administrator. Sometimes people set up their comments so all comments need to be moderated so go into pending. Your comment will show up on the site once the admin approves it.

My biggest issue is that many of my readers don’t have a wordpress account and therefore are unable to leave comments. Much of my traffic comes from pins on Pinterest or via Google. If anyone knows of a solution to this, please let me know.

That is one downside of using this platform. If you know them or have a way to contact your readers you could let them know they can set up a WordPress account just for reading and leaving comments. They don’t have to start a blog of their own. Otherwise I don’t know any solution at this time. Maybe someone else will have an idea. Have a great day Laura!

I’ve had a lovely day thanks. I’m in the UK so we’re heading towards the end of our busy weekend. Unfortunately, I think that most of my readers come from Pinterest just to check out a particular post or see a link on Google so I don’t know them. Maybe I could paste something in at the end of each blog post after my signature or something. It wouldn’t be too onerous if I copied and pasted it from a word doc or something.

I have to fish the occasional comment out of spam. It’s made more difficult by the recent resurgence of nonsense spam, though ― just today I had to go through like 130 spam comments (six pages’ worth) making sure there was nothing in there I needed to save before dumping them. This is why we can’t have nice things …
