C.O.M.E. & C. High in the Sky

Want to know the easiest way you can practice mindfulness? Well here is the greatest simplest one I know of. Look up. That’s all you have to do when you’re outside. Take a moment to stare into the heavens. If you are indoors just look out the window.

So if you haven’t practiced being mindful before, and are not sure where to start this is it; Look to the sky. It takes .03 seconds to learn. Then take notice of something. Perhaps a puffy cloud that looks like something. Maybe you see the moon. A rainbow, that’s awesome. Even if all you notice is that it looks like it’s going to rain or it’s a perfectly clear sky. Boom! Because you looked, observed and became aware of something you are now a sky-watching guru. Congrats on your new, awesome, mindfulness-practicing, expert skills.

Here are some examples of me practicing sky-watching. The photos are taken with a cell phone so they may not be fantastic or anything. However, the point of the Come & C is me giving examples of how I practice being mindful so you can try them out for yourself. The main point is to find something, anything, to pause and take notice of during your day. It’s a practice for helping you and myself to pause, relax and find little ways to better enjoy and appreciate your day.

The images I am using in this post were taken on April 8th, 2024. It turned out to be a cloudless day; nothing but clear skies. May not have been best for cloud watching, however, it did give me the opportunity to observe and be aware of things I had never seen before.

Clear blue sky

It was morning and decided to pause, look up, and be mindful of the sky. Even though there was nothing to see, it was still amazing. The sky was such a bright blue. So I decided to take a picture of it.

Sun Halo

Around lunchtime, I stepped outside, looked up, and saw a ring around the sun. I thought it was cool so I grabbed a picture of it. Roze told me it’s called a sun halo and that they are rare. Turns out it was a good thing that it was such a clear sky day.

Sun burst early in Eclipse

This image I took between 2-3 pm. Earlier when observing the sun halo Roze informed me today there would be an eclipse. I couldn’t really see anything. Just looked like the bright sun as usual. So I tried to take a picture to see if it might show up on camera. Even though the camera didn’t really catch it either, it still made a cool picture with the light streaming.

Eclipse taken via cell phone through a welding helmet

Later on, when the eclipse was nearly over I remembered my grandfather’s welding helmet. I went to the garage and found it all dusty and everything. Looked up to the sun and wow, I was amazed. Even though it was close to being over I still got to see it. Nothing like what I’ve seen in movies and TV. Going from left to right. Instead, it was going upwards. The sun was a neon green and the moon a black dot. I tried to take a picture of it through the welding mask. Didn’t turn out great but it did kinda catch it.

So if you want an easy start for being more mindful, the sky is the limit. When you’re busy or feeling stressed out, stop and look up. Pause and look to the sky, take a deep breath, and relax. It only takes a few seconds, however, it could be just the thing to help slow things down so everything doesn’t feel so hectic.

Tell me what type of sky makes you feel the most at ease. Starry, clear, rainy, sunrise, sunset…? Me, it’s a toss-up between a sunset or a blue sky with puffy clouds slowly drifting by.

Thanks for stopping by and until next time, keep on going and keep on growing.

Glad you enjoyed it. Do you like to cloud watch? I just love finding shapes in the clouds and the simple peace of lying in the grass (or my zero gravity chair) looking up at the sky.

Yes, I love watching clouds. White puffy ones above a blue ocean or grey rapidly moving storm clouds. It’s fun when you find a shape or see the clouds in the moonlight. Thanks for your post, your photos are great. Best for now S

Beautiful! Look up! It’s a toss-up for me. We have dark night skies here, so I’m blessed to be able to see the abundant stars on dark-moon nights and on bright-moon nights it’s light enough to read a book by the moonlight alone. I love the night sky. We also get dense fogs often in the mornings, and the times of fog and especially when it’s foggy and raining and the skies are variegated grays and the rain is pattering (or pounding) on the roof — I love that at least as much. 🙂

Yes Camilla, I enjoy listening to the rain also. It’s raining here today and I just spent a few moments sitting in the open doorway listening to it. It’s very calming don’t you find? And the sky, day or night, is mesmerizing. So much of nature is beautiful to watch.

A great perspective and impressive article. This is my first page that I have visited an read in your blog. Actually no need a camera or anything to else to look (or to look up), the looking up by itself the main part, camera or other things just like a pen you drop on a paper… You showed me this, you made me to think this… You are amazing. Thank you, Love, nia

By the way I forgot to say this, photographs are beautiful too. The blue as I was looking up the sky, you almost put this feeling through your photograph. Thank you, Love, nia

Yes Nia, I agree, the photos aren’t necessary for being mindful. They are just to show examples of things we sometimes don’t notice or take for granted. Being mindful itself is simply stopping for a moment to notice something, anything.. Hope you’ll check out more of our posts. Have a great day!

I love to watch the sky filled with clouds gently floating by. Also enjoy the moon in the evening – it just pulls me in.

I’m with you on that Bev. The sky has always captivated me. I used to lay out on the lawn with my children looking at cloud shapes and even kept them up super late one year to see the Perseid Meteor shower. Take care and have a nice weekend.
