The other day I came upon a realization. Some of the things we (Razz & Roze at Razzworks) were celebrating as milestones turn out to be benchmarks. There is a difference between the two, however, I still believe it’s important to celebrate each and every victory along the journey. After all celebrating the victory, checkpoints, milestones, or benchmarks is more about giving yourself a pat on the back and encouraging yourself to keep on going and keep on growing.
So what is the difference? Well, I’m going to explain it in the shortest and simplest of terms I can.
A milestone is something achieved for the first time and nothing can change that.
A benchmark is a high point you’ve reached and you hope to repeat and/or improve on it.
Example of a milestone = A child just learned how to crawl, the next milestone is taking their first step.
Example with a website = Published your first post, and/or you got your first comment
Example of a benchmark = You lifted 100 KG, hopefully, you’ll be able to do it again (repeat) and/or lift more (improve)
Example with a website = This month you got 5 comments. No guarantee for next month however hopefully you’ll get more.
Also, I should note that there are times when you achieve something that might be both a milestone and a benchmark at the same time. Most of the time this will occur when it’s the first time reaching an objective or a high number of something. For Example here at RazzWorks, we had 2.2K views in January. That is a benchmark for us but also a milestone we worked hard to achieve. It will remain, as our best month so far, until we reach a higher number of views (i.e. 2.5k in June)
The most important thing to keep in mind is that you celebrate each victory. Both benchmarks and milestones. Be your own cheerleader and encourage yourself along your journey. Also, as you progress, milestones tend to become further and further apart. At the same time, benchmarks become more difficult to attain however, you can always change things up and look for new types of benchmarks to challenge yourself with along your journey.
This is what we here at Razzworks are celebrating right now.
We just hit the milestone of 600 followers, oops, I mean benchmark because after all if someone stops following the total number can go down.
A cool benchmark we reached of more than 1k views per month for a 5th month in a row. Thanks everyone for checking us out.
And this one is a milestone for sure, and that is getting over 10k views in total. Nothing can take that one away from us so it is officially a milestone and not a benchmark.
Remember regardless if it’s a benchmark, milestone, or even a mini goal you accomplish. Celebrate ever little victory in your life on your journey. Until next time keep on going and keep on growing.
