WOW 015 – The Journey

Written by:

Antique style portrait of Ralph Walso Emerson

I know this quote is very short and simple and has become sort of cliché but I still like it and it has made me think this week. So life is a journey, but where are we headed and will we know when we get there?

You see, I read something this week that had me questioning a lot of things in life. And not even for myself but thinking of my children and other family and friends. I may ramble a bit just have a bit of patience with me as I try to put my thoughts into words.

What I read was about how we work 8 hours a day to sleep 5, we work 6 days a week to rest one, we work all year to take 1 or 2 weeks holiday, and we work all our life to retire old and tired. So what is the point?

Then I saw this quote and my brain heaved a big sigh of relief. It’s not about where we’re going or where we will end up. That’s looking too far ahead. It’s about the journey.

Are you doing what you want to with your life? Are you the person you want to be? Don’t look too far ahead but think about what you can do now to bring you closer. Maybe take a few baby steps forward and see how it feels.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet. Born May 25, 1803 and died April 27, 1882 in Concord, Massachusetts, USA

When you go on a journey somewhere, whether it’s a walk in a local park or a tour of another country, you’re not wishing for it to end. Quite likely you are looking around, seeing and doing new things, and enjoying every moment; wishing it would never end.

It’s actually a great analogy for life. I know I don’t want it to end. Not out of a fear of death and what happens next but because I have a family I love, I have grandchildren I want to see grow up and I have a wonderful husband. All these things, plus plans for further steps on my journey, make me want this life to go on and on. There are so many things I want to do and experience.

My journey has slowed down as I’ve aged and become less agile but I’m still going. There are new skills I’d like to learn, places I’d love to see and friends I haven’t met yet. My journey is about experiences now.

Even if you don’t have big plans it’s still a journey. We still need to set goals and work on little steps to reach that goal. Make plans just like you would if you were planning your next vacation. Maybe your goal is as simple as developing a morning routine that works for you (not as simple as it sounds) or as big as starting your own business. It doesn’t matter what it is we need to break it down and start moving forward with it, take those baby steps.

Every goal is a destination on our journey and every time we reach one we need to acknowledge our accomplishment and celebrate it. Don’t ever stop setting goals, making plans or moving forward on your journey. For many people, there was only the big plan of working their whole life to retire and enjoy life and then something happens and they don’t get to.
Enjoy your life now! Make it part of your plan. We aren’t guaranteed a certain amount of time so you need to do what you can every day. Have fun, enjoy time with family and friends, and enjoy life’s journey with those you love.

I’d love to hear how you are making the most of your journey. Leave it in the comments

Loved reading this. Aging is such a personal journey, everyone seems to have their own one. Agree ..having fun doing what makes us happy while we are at it, is a choice which makes it more worthwhile.

So glad you enjoyed this post! It can be difficult sometimes to sort our life out and determine our journey. I really feel if we can enjoy each day and take small steps towards our goal before we know it we’ve done it and it didn’t seem to take so long. Have a beautiful day!

Wonderful post! I am loving retirement! I finally get to have time for myself, doing the things I enjoy doing, like reading, writing, and coming and going as I please. I have no pressure to do anything, to be anywhere, except for Doctors’ appts… 🙂 I get to experience life a bit slower, so I can take in all the beauty of Mother Nature around me.
I find you notice more when life isn’t going by so fast.
After my career of having to be on call every night, as well as work long days, it is a big relief. The only thing ruining my peaceful retirement is all the surgeries I have been needing, but then again, I still get to relax with no pressures afterwards… lol All in all, I am not complaining about getting older!!

Yes Stella, I am finding the same since I haven’t been able to work (13 yrs). We got our first home almost 8 years ago. It is in the country surrounded by trees and I love to sit out on the deck and watch the birds, chipmunks and squirrels. There is a sort of happy leisure we get to experience that is harder to see when we’re living a busy life.
I’m happy for you that you are enjoying life and doing things you want to. Keep on enjoying the journey!

Ohh that country house sounds like a dream… 🌞 Mother Nature is my drug of choice too, it helps you feel better to be in the midst of it!
What a great way to describe it, happy leisure! Here’s to more happy leisure!!

loved your words, thank you for such a beautiful and important reminder. I very often get lost on worrying about finding a better job, growing professionally and wanting to have children… and in the end I spend more time in my mind than on earth. So thank you 🙂

You are very welcome Lole! It’s good to have goals and things to strive for but we can’t forget about today. Do something, any tiny little thing, to move you towards that goal and then enjoy the day you’ve been given. Enjoy the journey!

Your quote is the mantra by which we live our lives! In 2017 we sold everything and bought a boat. Since then we have cruised round quite a few European countries, mainly France, and we firmly believe it’s the journey that counts, the destination is secondary. Wise words indeed.

That is so wonderful Maryjane! You are living your dream and enjoying each day for what it is. Maybe one day not far from now we’ll do something similar. Except not a boat, I prefer to stay on dry land lol. Have an awesome day!

Life is a journey over a road with pot holes and sharp turns, dead ends but a journey worth taking

I like your description! It’s so true; the journey is not always smooth but we learn something every time we face adversity or solve a problem. Some lessons we learn the first time through while others, like the placement of potholes in a road, take many trips through to learn. I really appreciate your input.

I think those aphorisms that seem the most trite or worn sometimes contain the deepest wisdom. I spent a long time believing that my circumstances had to change in order for me to be happy. It was all about some perceived destination. It took me a long time to figure out that even if my circumstances changed, I still took myself with me. So if I was unhappy, I carried that unhappiness with me into the new circumstance and nothing really changed. The “destination” was a mirage. Now I get that it really is about the journey, which means it’s about now. I look for joy in the moment and beauty in ordinary things. And I am surrounded by beauty! When you see things differently, you see different things. Thanks for these positive thoughts! 🙂

What a wonderful story Camilla! I think that’s why these quotes become so ‘ordinary’ and seemingly overused, because there is so much truth in them. I’m so happy that you figured it out and can find beauty and joy in the every day things. Have a wonderful day!

Good to remember it is about the journey – agree with your writing that every goal that is reached is a destination that should be acknowledged and celebrated as part of the journey!

Enjoyed reading this; I can relate.
For me, it’s important to keep moving while I can (no procrastinating) because there will be times for breaks; there’ll even be times when it’s just quiet and nothing is happening.
