C.O.M.E. & C. THE POWER

THE POWER OF ELECTRICITY

It is winter and it is cold. Even though I find it difficult to appreciate the outdoors when there is a lot of snow and it is very cold I’m not saying there isn’t lots to be mindful of outdoors. However, after some sitting and thinking in front of the wood stove I ended up thinking how lucky I am to live somewhere in the world with the power of electricity always available to me. At the same time realizing how we tend to take it for granted because it’s always available. So I asked myself.

Then I decided that this post would be a perfect way to practice mindfulness towards some of the essential things that electricity provides, creating ease and comfort for some of the basic things in life. I spent time this month being mindful and grateful for having electricity, the power that improves and helps sustain day-to-day life. Many of us sometimes take it for granted until it is gone. The power goes out and we feel lost, not sure what to do; scrambling to find flashlights; wondering if our phones will hold out before needing to be recharged.

The Source Of My Power

Outside somewhere is a big power plant of some kind that manages the power we use every day. Then it runs through tons and tons of wires along poles with transformers to boost the power. Then it connects to our home travelling to a box that divides the power throughout the home. This makes electricity for personal use easy peasy. All I have to do is find a cord and plug it in. Hurrah, I’ve Got POWER!

Then There Was Light And It Was Good

Image of ceiling lights. One bare bulb with pull chain the other a fluorescent fixture with two tubes

During the winter the days get shorter, which means it gets dark earlier. With the great invention of light bulbs I don’t have to go wandering through rooms with my hands stretched out to keep me from bumping into walls and door frames. All I have to do is either pull the chain hanging down from the ceiling or reach for the magic switch on the wall. Boom I can see! Yeahhh! I can see where I am going.

Power Makes Me Strong

I’m so lucky to be able to live in a modern world where food can be stored in a cool fridge or even frozen in a freezer for later use. Things like jams, jelly, fruit and veggies or after I go out on the hunt in the wild jungle of my local grocery store hoping to score a good sale to bring home to eat. The power of electricity makes it easy to warm, bake, fry, or boil whatever it is I want to fill my tummy with making me strong and healthy for the next hunt. Mmmmm, I am a slave to my taste buds.

Feel The Power

When it’s cold outside it is very nice to step into a warm cozy home. The biggest thing on the go today is heat pumps. The great thing about them is that in summer they can also help keep your place cool. Some people have electric rads to keep them warm in cold weather. Also sometimes when there is a cold snap in the winter a small portable heater is used to help keep yourself warm and cozy. Many people use oil to heat their homes, however, even they require electricity to turn on and off. I don’t care for the cold, so I am very grateful that when I’m chilly all I have to do is click a button and ahhhh warmth.

Power Up For Play

Electricity allows us to power up the devices we like to use for entertainment to dull the mind and kill our time. Having electricity as close and convenient as a wall plug allows us to watch our favourite movies being streamed from VHS to our FAT SCREEN TV. Also, it keeps our precious phones charged up so as to stay in touch with friends and family because you can carry it around with you. Even listen to some awesome tunes stored on 8-Track or other media devices. I am so grateful that there is power available to keep me connected to the world with all my fancy shmancy electronic devices that many of us rely on in this modern-day society.

Power is vital

Last but not least for some power is vital for helping to maintain a quality of life. I am mindful and grateful for how the availability of power supports my health and wellness. For me whenever the power goes out there is always one thing that comes to mind for me. I hope it comes back up soon for when I go to sleep I use a CPAP. My body has this annoying habit of deciding not to breathe when I sleep. The CPAP machine blows air in my nose to help reduce how often and for how long my body chooses to take a break from breathing. So if there is no power then no CPAP and the next day for me is very exhausting due to a night of poor sleep. Therefore I am very grateful that I live somewhere that generally has power 24/7/365 with only occasional outages due to a storm. 99% of the time power is back on within 24 hours. I think the longest power has ever been out due to a storm is 3 weeks. Which is super rare and usually due to a superstorm.

Yes, I agree, heat is crucial this time of year in the northern hemisphere. Phones have become so much more than just a device to make calls. We depend on them alot. Thanks for stopping in and commenting. Take care!

Wonderful post showing the power of gratitude! Thank you for the share…

I am very grateful for the ease of using electricity for all of the above. If it wasn’t for electricity, I wouldn’t be able to read this awesome post and others people share. I am grateful for the opportunity of reading the profound things that others write that help me on my own journey in this life.

I lived through a long power outage a few times while I was still working in apartment buildings but the one that sticks out most for me was in December 2013 in Toronto. We had no power for over a week and the generator that covered basic systems of the 15 story building I was working in at the time gave out after 2 days. We had to do fire watches then, walking the property every hour, so hubby and I took turns. You never really understand what electricity does for you, until it is gone. I remember sitting in my car, just to charge the cell phones… I was never more grateful for it when it came back. This experience opened my eyes to how much I was taking it for granted so I don’t anymore.

That’s awesome Stella! I’m glad that you learned meeting from that experience. We had no power for about 4 days after hurricane Fiona and I can say we were some glad to get it back. My son across town was 2 weeks without power but, you know, they made due. We are always prepared with candles, lanterns and flashlights during the winter as power outages are not uncommon.
Having the internet is a big plus too or how would we be doing what we’re doing right now. Touching the lives of people around the world.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment Stella. Have a great day!

Thanks for the comment Anita. We deal with power outages a few times every year but usually not for long. The last long outage was due to Fiona. Last week it was our for just a couple hours. It certainly makes us appreciate the power when we have it back.

Thanks for this post – it too made me grateful for the electricity we have running into our homes every day here in the UK. In Cape Town South Africa we have something called load shedding. The electricity is switched off at certain times of the day for hours at a time as the country’s electricity grid is no longer able to manage with the load, so they kind of share it out between different areas at different times. Many people have adapted their homes over the years, cos yes, this has been going on for years, to include gas stoves and other non-electric items such as battery operated lights and have had to invest in small generators for their homes or businesses.

Wow, that’s crazy! I can’t imagine living with power out part of every day. I’ve seen it in movies but didn’t know it really happens. You must be super grateful to have constant power in the UK. Thanks for commenting.

This is a great post! We’re aware of the things electricity give us, but to see so many items listed together is kinda mind-blowing.

Also: I love your photo collection of electrical outlets.

Isn’t it? Those electrical outlets are the actual ones we use in our house and garage. Razz went around and unplugged lots of things to get those pictures. Same with all the lights and other photos. It’s an old house his grandfather bought back in the 50’s so we are blessed to have it now and there is so much history in it. It’s good to be aware of all we have and all that electricity provides for us.

Like others here, I’m so glad to have electricity too. It’s something we can easily take for granted . . . until we have a power cut like we did a couple of years ago during a storm. We were without power for a week and it seemed like an eternity! It was during the month of December and our house was freezing, so heat was the thing I was most glad to have restored. The experience made us a bit more appreciative of modern conveniences.

Isn’t it so true that we don’t realize what we have until its gone? We had a 4 day outage after Fiona which luckily was earlier in the fall so heat wasn’t an issue. For us preparing food changed. Razz has a wood stove in the garage so we were needing to haul food and cooking gear out to the garage through a tangle of fallen trees. It was inconvenient but we didn’t go hungry. Electricity is a wonderful thing!
