WOW 011 – Giving

Written by:

I chose today’s quote very carefully to portray the way I’m feeling this Christmas season. Yes, I said Christmas! I am a Christian and celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th like countless others. I respect others’ beliefs and love to learn how other cultures and religions celebrate their holidays throughout the year.

With that out of the way, I’ll get on to what I’ve been thinking. I was taught from a very young age the importance of giving. My mother would take us kids out shopping and give us each a spending limit to buy gifts for each other and mom and dad, grandparents etc.. I loved picking just the right gift for each person and wrapping them up to give on Christmas day. And I loved seeing the joy (real or not) on the faces of those who opened the gifts I gave. I guess that’s why I love giving gifts today

However, it was never about how much money we could spend on each gift and it still isn’t today. My mom was always very frugal and taught us to be as well. Some years we would make gifts with whatever talent we had. I remember when I was probably about 7 or 8 years old drawing pictures to give to my cousins because I wanted to give gifts to everyone I knew.

Now I have more skills and can make gifts people can use and/or enjoy in some way. I don’t spend alot of money at Christmas but there is always a gift for everyone in my family from my mom to my adult children, their partners, my grandchildren and even my great niece and great nephews.

Francis of Assisi
Founder of the Franciscan Order
Canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 16 July 1228
Born: Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone 1181
Died: October 3, 1226

I know I could save myself time and just give a bigger gift to those in my immediate family but that doesn’t sit right with me. I would rather give more gifts to more people even if the gifts are smaller and handmade.

For example, this year I crocheted dolls for all the littlest people and made crocheted snowflakes, angels and bookmarks for the grown-ups. The teens are a bit trickier but I came up with the idea to buy thrift shop frames and create a button art initial for each of them. Some years I’ve crocheted character hats, baked cookies or made fudge. It doesn’t matter as long as I can make something for everyone.

“It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.”

W.T. Ellis

Like Francis of Assisi said it is in giving that we receive. By giving these small handmade gifts I receive so much joy. I can’t wait for Christmas just so all my family will come over and open their gifts. I did buy a few things too but very little money was spent compared to what the average person would spend. Plus all my bills are paid and I’m not in debt so there’s that.

Besides it’s not about the money. It’s about giving a gift from the heart. And every gift I make and give goes out with all the love I have for that person.

What are your thoughts on this quote? I’d love to read your comments.

I love your take on this. I, too, always do my utmost best to find the perfect gift for someone. It gives me so much pleasure finding that one thing I know will make them happy 🙂 I’ve never made my own gifts, although I often end up baking tons of cupcakes with my nieces just because it’s a lot of fun and valuable time spent with them.

That’s so nice that you bake with your nieces. I’m sure they’ll grow up with wonderful memories of that time spent together. It’s often the little things that make the biggest impression. Even when it comes to gift giving. Have a very Merry Christmas!

there’s so many thoughts and quotes on the subject right…I have no idea why or the point, my fave was made by Lululemon founder Chip Wilson that really struck and stuck with me, ‘ giving without an expectation of receiving anything in return’ and over the last, well quite of few Christmases I’ve done that…saw something, someone I knew should have, and well, happy christmas from a very secret santa….it’s a lot about what you think those you feel an obligation to give that drives me nuts…seriously for a lot of them, just sitting down and sharing a drink would be a gift enough for me…but others don’t get that….I’ve a couple of friends that just do that randomly, and have convinced me to join them on Christmas day to help serve meals to the homeless Christmas day….that’s what this holiday should be about, giving, sharing, helping….I just thought of this, which is probably stupid, but would happen if those that disagree with what the Israeli army’s doing, grabbed shovels, blackets food, and whatever, and crossed over in to Gaza to help…..???…..

Warren it seems we have similar views on the gift giving. I agree that just sitting and visiting with me is what I’d really enjoy and it doesn’t have to cost anything.
As for bringing blankets and food into Gaza, I’d love to see that in the news! Merry Christmas Warren and thanks for stopping in.

Sharing the fruits of your talents, as you do, make awesome personal gifts. When you craft something for someone else, you’re also gifting the time involved in your creations. I have no artsy skills, so I give what is needed. So among other necessities-it’s toilet seats, door knobs, and shoes this year! 🙂

Thank you Nancy! I appreciate your kind words. I give a few useful gifts also and love receiving them. I was thrilled to receive a new toilet seat one year! This year I got towels for one daughter and a baby proofing kit for my son with a 3 month old. No one needs more trinkets and clutter. Thanks for commenting.

This is beautiful. I love home made gifts! It’s much more thoughtful and personal.
I wish I had a skill to make gifts for people, but sadly I do not…yet! So for now I try to find something I believe they will love. Or if I’m out with someone during the year and they mention something they like, I make note of it in my phone for later!

Well done for saying Christmas instead of this horrible new term that’s crept over from the US. It’s not ‘holidays’, it’s a Christian festival. I’m not Christian as such, but my daughter is, and this celebration deserves the proper title and that’s what sets it apart from any other holiday. I love the quote from WT Ellis, and I couldn’t agree more. Merry Christmas! 🙂

Thank you very much Alli! It will always be Christmas for me. you are so right, it is a Christian celebration. We don’t ask those of other faiths to mute their celebrations so I won’t mute mine. I appreciate your comment and your respect. Have a very merry Christmas!

My daughter learned to crochet and made us all fish hats for Christmas this year. I loved it. It’s a great thing. It’s a gift. When you have a special talent and want to share.

That’s wonderful as it appears you are very much into fishing! Handmade gifts just feel more special don’t they? I have received paintings from my mom and sister, preserves and honey from my homesteading sister and many crocheted and knitted gifts from my mom – I love them all!

Interesting and lovable take on gifting to loved ones with a heart. Very true, it’s not about the value and glam rather a true gift that comes with love.
