3 Common Culprits Of Daytime Drowsiness

Written by:

Are you currently dealing with feeling tired all the time during your day? You’re pretty sure you are sleeping fine, not staying up too late, or getting up too early. However, you still end up either drowsy through the day or have sudden moments of fatigue where you could just fall asleep if you closed your eyes any more than 5 minutes. Maybe you know someone like that.

I understand what it’s like. Several years ago I felt so wiped out all the time, that I actually took the time to go see a doctor about it. It took over two years of blood tests, questions and checking different things before finding out the main thing that was causing all this.

So if you or someone you know is dealing with this type of issue on a daily basis I strongly recommend you go see a professional like a doctor or therapist to help you get to the root cause of the problem. Meanwhile, let’s explore a few of the most common things that are known for causing a person to feel tired out all the time besides the normal obvious reasons. So, not counting habits of staying up late a lot, or dragging yourself out of bed too early every morning; or worse burning the candle at both ends, meaning both staying up late and getting up early on a regular basis let’s look at some other reasons.

TOP 3 ISSUES THAT CAUSE

DAYTIME FATIGUE

Situational Stress
When major situation changes take place, it can cause an extreme amount of stress on the mind and body. This can include things like a job loss, war, relationship problems, or death in the family. It’s not uncommon for it to also affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. With situational stress, it usually takes some time to get through the issues and there are times when professional help is needed.

Poor Eating Habits
Junk food, too much fried foods, or a lot of carbohydrates especially sugary types. These types of food may taste great, and can also give you short bursts of energy. However, all the time is not healthy. I know for myself when I indulge in a nice tasty sweet snack, it sometimes causes me to have a sugar crash and end up needing to take a nap. Your body needs regular nutritionally balanced meals along with fruits and vegetables. Also, try your best not to eat too close to bed time. Food needs time to digest.

Medical Issues
Regular checkups with a doctor can let you know if you have a heart issue, or diabetes, thyroid problems, or trouble breathing while asleep like sleep apnea. Also if you’re on any medications, some of them can cause sleepiness. When you see your doctor ask if you should consider taking some supplements like magnesium, multivitamins, or anything along those lines. For me, I’ve started taking B complex and found it has helped with the circulation in my feet. Just make sure to check with your doctor first.

As you can see it’s not a big huge list or anything. The aim of writing this article is to simply give you or anyone else a point in a direction of things to look into. I know from personal experience the frustration of dealing with fatigue all the time. In reality it may not be all the time, however it can sometimes feel that way. The next section is a list of benefits of getting a good rest, once you have gotten your fatigue a little better under control.

THE REWARDS OF BEING WELL RESTED WITH A GREAT SLEEP

More Energized
When you get your proper amount of sleep, your physical body doesn’t starve for more fuel to keep going. When a person doesn’t get enough sleep they tend to eat more fatty foods and carbohydrates which are not as healthy overall.

Increased Mental
When you’re alert you have a much better ability to focus and concentrate on tasks and activities that you do throughout your day. Being more focused also allows you to be more efficient.

Healthier Body
Getting good quality sleep helps your body physically in many ways. Your heart functions better, lowering chances of heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes and becoming overweight.

Sharper Mind
When the mind is well-rested, it is able to retain new information more easily and process problems quickly. Basically, it makes you mentally sharper and on the ball.

Emotionally Stronger
When you lack sleep, your mood can take a dip. So getting enough rest helps with preventing severe sadness and depression.

Better Healing
Your body heals itself when you sleep. If there is an infection, while sleeping the body releases proteins to help fight off stress, viruses, and inflammation. It also gets rid of bad toxins in the brain so you can think better during your awake hours.

There you go, the 3 biggest culprits in a lot of cases. Situational stress, not eating healthy on a regular basis, and some type of underlying medical condition. One of them may or may not be what is causing you to feel tired out all the time. However if you’re not sure where to start looking, at least now you have some things you can check into for yourself. Remember to seek a professional for the best advice that will work best for you. That way not only will you be less tired throughout the day but you’ll reap some of the additional benefits and perks I mentioned in the list above.

Oh just in case you were curious. Like I said in the beginning I went through the same thing with feeling dragged out and tired during the day for years. I took the time to see a professional and in the end, figured out why I was tired all the time. In my case, it turns out I deal with chronic fatigue due to having severe sleep apnea. With a machine, it was recorded that on average I would stop breathing multiple times and on average more than 5 times a night it would be for more than 3 minutes. The machine could not determine how long as it auto shuts off after 3 minutes each time.

The good news is knowing what my underlying issue is, I now function better during the day. I sleep with a CPAP each night, take naps in the day when needed, eat healthier, and try to be more active as best I can. Which helps me to keep going.

Now I know there are other issues that can cause people to be tired all the time during the day. What do you consider to be the next common culprit to being fatigued during the day? If you’re thinking of reading Razz & Roze’s articles, then my suggestion is to read them before bed so you can fall asleep faster.

Thanks for visiting RazzWorks, with all this talk about sleep I think I’m now ready for nap.

It’s great that you’ve highlighted some common causes of daytime fatigue, like situational stress, poor eating habits, and medical issues. Another common culprit is inadequate or poor-quality sleep, which can result from various factors such as sleep disorders, restless sleep, or excessive screen time before bedtime.🤝👍

Might be lack of iron in the body too. I have to keep my iron levels up. Check for food containing iron like green vegetables etc. Cut back on coffee and tea because they stop the body from absorbing iron from food.

Thanks for commenting. Those are great tips. I actually went through iron deficiency anemia a few years ago and dealt with some of the worst fatigue of my life. I appreciate your input and hope you are having a beautiful day!

    Hi,
    This was a great post.
What were your issues? How did you recover from yours?
This is so helpful for me. I have been having this issue for more than two years now.
I am seeing a physiotherapist. His advice for me was to rest more.

Hi and thank you for your comment and questions. Razz saw his family doctor and went through many tests for things like iron, vitamins D and B12 deficiencies, and diabetes. In the end he did a home sleep study and discovered he had severe sleep apnea. He uses a CPAP machine to help with this now though it doesn’t cure the problem. He also learned to listen to his body and not fight the fatigue. Nap if and when you need to and get up if you can’t sleep. It’s really important to learn to manage this condition as there isn’t a cure. Hope you are able to get the rest you need. Good day.

We’d always have sleeping hours in the middle of the day when I was a kid, just a few minutes to recharge our batteries and start over. We did have a lot of energy back then and were battling over this habit, but now I see just how beneficial it is. Drinking too much coffee and eating the wrong foods cannot be healthy in the long run if we continue to ignore our physically demands. Resting is necessary.

    Have a great day!
