Father’s Day is this weekend and I’m sure many of us are wondering what we can do for our dad to show him how much he is loved. We’ve all done cards and gifts but how about making this year extra special? Here I have a list of thoughtful ideas that put Dad center-stage. Choose one or put a bunch of them together to give Dad a super special day.
This list is a combination of gifts and activities that cost only your time and devotion or could cost alot depending on your area. It’s not about how much money you spend on Dad but about spending time with him and making him feel special and honoured.
- Start by making him a special breakfast and serving him in bed. Don’t forget to wish him a happy Father’s Day as soon as you see him. If you don’t want to cook or don’t live at home maybe take him out for breakfast or brunch at a nearby restaurant. Breakfast is generally the cheapest meal when you’re eating out.

GIFTS
Think about what your dad likes and choose something appropriate.
- Basket of specialty men’s grooming products like soaps, aftershave, beard oil and beard soap. There is probably a local craftsperson who makes them near you. Check at your local farmer’s market.
- Basket of gourmet chocolates or other foods your father loves, cheeses, seafood, nuts, etc… Again your local farmer’s market is probably a great source for these things.
- If your father is into cooking or gardening there are lots of cool gadgets he probably doesn’t have. Or maybe specialty ingredients or plants he’d love.
- A book or magazine subscription is great for the dad that loves to read.
- Pick up a bottle of his favourite wine or some local craft beer.

ACTIVITIES
There are so many activities out there that there is sure to be something every dad would love to do. Do it together to make it extra special unless Dad is in real need of some alone time.
- Take him fishing, golfing, rock climbing, zip-lining, swimming or camping. For those who want or can spend alot of money on dad maybe a weekend getaway doing any of these activities
- Plan a staycation at home. Have a picnic in the backyard, set up the tent and have a campfire or barbeque. Tell ghost stories, dad jokes or reminisce about the past.

- If Dad is a nature nut find and book a local eco-friendly accommodation such as an Earthship, camping in the trees or complete off-grid camping site for a fun family weekend.
- Have a video game competition with his favourite game.
- Have a movie night at home with Dad’s favourite movie and snacks.
- Maybe Dad would enjoy a spa day. You can book him in at a local spa or do it yourself at home. A nice long bath followed by a facial, manicure and/or pedicure is sure to make him feel special.
- Invite your father out to a trivia night or Karaoke.
- Take him to dinner at his favourite steakhouse, seafood restaurant, Sushi bar or wherever he really loves but won’t take himself.
- Do something artsy together. You could teach him something you enjoy or find out what he’d like to try. You could go to a local pottery studio where you can paint your own piece or try some kind of craft at home. Maybe paint a picture or go out and do some nature photography.

The key is to think of Dad – what would he enjoy, what would he like to do or receive from you? Maybe it’s just your time he wants in which case just seeing you and spending the day together may bring him more joy than anything else.
Whatever you choose to do or give your father I hope you have an amazing day and spend some quality time together. Our fathers are both gone now so Razz and I understand what it’s like for those of you who don’t have a father to celebrate with. Remember him and do something in his honour this Father’s Day.
For all you Dads out there Happy Father’s Day; I hope it’s a great one!
