Sometimes life seems to be going along quite well, but suddenly you get this mental and physical feeling of sluggishness for no apparent reason. Low energy, a lack of motivation, and a careless attitude are the telltale signs. However, it is more difficult to find a way to get yourself out of such sluggishness.
Of course, accepting it and hoping it passes is one choice. Applying some techniques, however, will improve the way you feel and, ideally, help you get back on track. I can identify with such sluggishness all too well, due to the fact I deal with fatigue quite often, so I want to share with you the things that I have personally found to be helpful when dealing with sluggishness.
How to get past sluggishness
(A) FREE YOUR MIND OF DISTRACTIONS
One of the main causes of sluggishness is mental clutter. Things like tasks needing to be done such as emails/text messages needing a response, housework, and yard work are just a few examples of things that over time can pile up and stress you out. You don’t have to complete all of these chores to relax. What I do is put them in a notebook. You want to remove them out of your head, and then outline the next step that must be taken so you can move along.
(B) CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE
I like my everyday routine, but now and then I have to change it in order to keep it from getting boring. I’ll not bother using an alarm and wake up whenever I want to, rather than getting up at the same hour every morning. Leave the phone at home and simply take in the sounds of nature when going out for a walk. Even actions that would seem to go against best practices, like eating takeout or lounging on the sofa while watching mindless videos, can occasionally be healthy. Basically, relax and enjoy as much of the day as you can.
(C) BE ACTIVE
Finding a way to be physically active is a great method to overcome a state of sluggishness. Being active is known to trigger a number of chemical pathways in your brain, making you feel happier and more relaxed than you did before. Making sure to do something active will also help you feel more confident while strengthening your sense of self-worth.
(D) STEP BACK & DO SOMETHING ELSE
Stress that is related to a difficult job or task can definitely make anyone end up dealing with sluggishness. Your thoughts may become dominated by the problem, and it may seem impossible to think of anything else. When this occurs, I find that it is best to do something entirely different for a while or even a day or two instead of continuing with the frustrating task or project. It’s remarkable how coming back clear-headed, I can finish in no time at all (or at least it feels that way due to being in the zone) what might have otherwise taken the entire day if I had persisted in trying to finish the task while stressed out.
(E) PERFORM AN ACT OF KINDNESS
Aside from helping the other individual, I always find that doing a good deed for someone else makes me feel better about myself. Your spouse, a stranger, or a member of your family could be the beneficiary of the kind deed. Additionally, you could decide to give to a worthy cause or do some volunteer work. For me, helping people who need a hand with something is a particularly effective way to gain some perspective on life and understand things aren’t as bad as they seem.
So there you go, some ideas to help rid you of that sluggishness. Maybe you have an idea or suggestion that works for you. Let us know in the comments, Roze and I would love to hear them. Until next time don’t forget to click like & follow.
