One way or another everyone has a mother. I realize not all mothers are wonderful and my heart goes out to those who don’t have a mother or had a mother who was less than ideal. As tomorrow is Mother’s Day I thought of this quote from Lincoln that I have always loved. The sentiment is so sweet and I couldn’t agree more.
According to what I read on the internet Lincoln’s mother died when he was only 9 years old but he never forgot her. It is said that she was warm and affectionate as well as being ambitious and having a great power of analysis. Traits that shaped Lincoln into the man he became.
As for me, I have a truly wonderful mother. She is sweet, kind and compassionate. She is very intelligent and to this day I think she can do anything she sets her mind to. Since her retirement, she has been active in her community doing some volunteering and joining various groups. Her activities range from knitting and singing in the church choir to visiting seniors and going out to local musical events. She keeps a very busy schedule – one I could never keep up with! At 82 years old she is in excellent health so I believe I can look forward to having her around for a long time yet.
When I was a child I remember her guidance as always gentle. She was raising her 3 girls to be ladies and taught us proper manners and etiquette. She led by example and had quite a set of shoes to fill. Which I don’t feel I ever completely did. Everyone loved her! She had one of those personalities that made her extremely likeable. It’s one of her traits that I believe my sisters and I, and even our older brother, all got from her.
So with all that said I want to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and all the mothers reading this. If you are a mom, take some time to do something special for yourself even if your children don’t remember or acknowledge the day. If you have a mom nearby go see her and tell her you love her. I have always believed that every mother does the best she can with what she has, be it money, knowledge, skill or anything else. Some may not do a very good job but there is usually a reason for that. Unfortunately, I realize that this can result in a poor mother/child relationship.
I hope you all have something special planned either for yourself as a mom or for your mother. And remember, a mother doesn’t have to be biological or even related. It could be an older woman who cares for you, maybe a stepmother, grandmother, aunt, friend or even your father if he raised you on his own as both mother and father. We only get one mother, appreciate her, love her and let her know.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
