WOW 003 – Habits

Written by:

This is another quote from my 8th grade classroom wall. And its a good one. Just like habits form over time we can’t expect to get rid of them all of a sudden.

Whether your bad habit is smoking, drinking, gambling, over-eating, or spending too much on your smart-phone it didn’t become a habit all at once.

I’ve worked on bad habits throughout my life and I’ve taken various approaches. The most success I’ve had is by making a plan, starting small and increasing the challenge as I go.

For example, if you want to eat healthier you might not have great success if you try to stop eating junk food ‘cold turkey’ as they say. Make a plan to have a healthy meal each day, or even just a snack. Once that becomes easy add another challenge until you reach a level of healthy eating that you’re happy with. Maybe you still have junk food for a treat once a week but if that’s ok with you then you’ve succeeded.

This type of plan can work with any habit. What’s the bad habit you want to stop? How can you coax it down the stairs one at a time?

I received some revelation on habits. They begin with our thoughts but are rooted in believing something that isn’t true about ourselves or the habit. That belief brings thought. Those thoughts develop behavior. Those behaviors become habits. What is the root on this habit?

Thank you so much for adding this insight. That is a good question to ask when we are trying to break a bad habit – what is the root of the habit. If we know why we do something, we may be better able to abstain from it. I appreciate the added input on habits. Have a wonderful day!

Good question 🤔 Changing my eating habits is something I’m still trying to work on. I’m aware that I hold certain beliefs which might be the root of the issue (e.g. trying to be healthier = miserable, failing, self-hate). Thanks for this I will bring this to my next therapy session!

I’m glad to see you learned something from my post and have something to bring to your next session. I have to say I probably have the same underlying beliefs about eating healthy. I try to combat that by only trying to make a healthier choice at this particular time. Thanks for commenting and bringing this to my attention. Have a wonderful day!

It can take longer than expected, sometimes got to look at what you’re losing when you don’t change. Do I want to feel this way again?

I totally agree! I’ve been on a mission to break my bad habit of procrastinating; and just like you said, starting small and making a plan has been helping me a lot. I started by setting a timer for 10 minutes of focused work and then gradually increased the time as I got used to it. Now, I’m more productive than ever, and it really feels great! Thanks for the motivation and quote to keep working on my bad habits, one step at a time. Great post!

Gah, I can relate to this. I didn’t know how my too-much screen time crept up on me, but nowadays I find myself twitching to find my phone during the slightest moments of idleness. Will need to relook my patterns and see what’s triggering me to default to that. Maybe a substitute habit will do me good. Thanks for this post, Roze!

Thanks, Stuart for taking time out of your busy life to drop into RazzWorks. I think a lot of people can relate whether they like to admit it or not. I’m one of those people, grabbing my phone any moment I’m not otherwise occupied. It’s addictive. Let me know if you find something to replace the habit. Currently, I’m crocheting so that helps me resist the phone somewhat. Take care Stuart and have an awesome day!
