Feed the Beast Some Meat, Enough With the Junk Food

Written by:

The Beast I speak of is your brain. Day after day countless hours are spent scrolling through tidbits of information that for the most part are kinda useless. Or clicking through fairly easy-to-win games and puzzles. It satisfying due to the little bits of dopamine it provides your brain to feel happy for a brief fleeting moment.

Feeding your mind with real meat, as in real information that you can teach you something, for just a few minutes a day could very well change your life.

Consider cutting down on social media gossip and mindless junk posts for just one hour of your day. During that hour take the time to soak in some information that could very well improve your life.

Take some time and do some searching online, or take a stroll through a local bookstore and check out what other people are saying are the best books, magazines, or websites to check out in the area of improving your life.

You can do this for any area or subject you can think of. Some examples may include but are most certainly not limited to; Ways to improve your physical health, and how to become more energetic both mentally and physically. Or perhaps how to become more productive, or build bigger stronger relationships. Or maybe just some plain basic self-care, self-improvement, and personal development.

Here is some food for thought. A healthy snack bite of information for your brain to get a taste. By feeding your mind only 60 minutes of good information; no wait, let’s make it simpler, 30 min a day to ingest good solid information for your brain. That would equal about 180 hours of informative, sink-your-teeth-into-it meat for your brain each year. Even if you could only recall 10% of all that you consumed in the course of a year that would still be 18 hours of information that benefit you personally. How’s that for food for thought?

The reason I refer to the brain as a beast is that no matter how much information you feed it, it is always able to consume more. I don’t know if you could ever actually fully fill your brain.

Now imagine if you actually applied some of that information you gathered during the year, actually used and did something with just some of the things you learned. Would it or would it not change your life? Would your life improve? Would you start seeing new possibilities, doing things better, faster, and more skilled? What would happen if you kept doing it year after year?

But wait, maybe I’m putting the wagon before the horse. Never mind the possibilities of applying any knowledge you learn. You’re likely thinking what is it going to cost me? Thinking perhaps you can’t afford to be feeding the beast real meaty information.

Well if that is your excuse for not lifting your head from mindless scrolling and clicking. All I can tell you is if you don’t want to buy (invest) in a new book or magazine then try a used book store, flea market, or yard sale. You can even buy used books and magazines on the Internet. If you don’t want to spend any money at all. You can still find very informative information for free via libraries as well as blogs, videos, and podcasts on the internet.

Oh, wait, you have another reason why not. Ohhh you don’t have time. I see and you’re saying this knowing very well you just spent the last hour scrolling through your phone clicking like on memes and funny little short videos. Noticing an old friend just posted something about a trip they went on.

Do you know what I have to say about that? Pooeeee! Don’t have time to read, then download an audiobook, or as I mentioned already a podcast. This way you can listen to it in your vehicle while you travel back and forth to and from wherever it is you go; work, school, grocery store, or any other type of errand. After all, I’m sure you know you shouldn’t be playing with your phone while driving, so why not listen to some good enlightening information while you’re on the road? Also, the odds are high that you have a cell phone. Throw some useful videos on it. This way when you are somewhere sitting in a waiting area for your turn, to be served or for an appointment. You can watch a couple of short videos on how to improve something, or how to do something that’s beneficial to you.

So there you go, now you can afford it and also there are time slots you can use so as not to take you away from your clicky, long, strolly, dopamine candy you enjoy so much. All I’m suggesting is for you to take into consideration the idea of shutting off your social media notifications and take a brief break from the normal mindless distractions. Start feeding your mind with some bits of meaty information this week. Give it a taste, and try something new, you never know you could end up coming back for more. Remember I don’t think you can actually fully fill your beast, brain I mean, It seems to always be able to devour more.

I try not to spend much time on mindless BS. I enjoy funny things posted on Facebook and personal things friends and family have shared but I’ve unfollowed all of the political rhetoric sites that drive my brain nuts. I enjoy audiobooks, that way I can listen and do puzzles, diamond paintings, or paint-by-number kits at the same time. I think I’m up to 45 audiobooks and podcasts this year so far. Last year I think I listened to over 200 total! Great article! You give pretty sound advice and information! Thanks!

Thanks for your kind words Deb! I really appreciate it. Sorry it took me so long to respond but your comments ended up in my spam folder. Shame on WordPress! LOL

Like you I enjoy Facebook for the memes, chronic pain groups, and photos from family and friends. I go there to catch up with family I don’t see often enough. Audiobooks are a great idea, I’ll have to look into them and see what I can find. I love to read but don’t get much time except at bedtime. I’m so glad you are enjoying our posts. Hope you are having a great day!

I signed up for Audible a couple years ago. I have trouble with my eyes when I try to actually read. I’m surprised I can paint and do puzzles! Lol. I really enjoy my Audible account!!

        Peace ✌️
