No matter who you are you need your own personal space. Whether you spend your days at work surrounded by people or work from home and share your space with family members or roommates in the evenings. There’s nothing like being able to get away to your own cozy corner without intrusions.
What does that space look like? It’s different for everyone. Maybe it’s a corner in a shared bedroom or maybe you have a whole room to yourself. Maybe you haven’t found a spot for yourself yet because you think there is no room in your home. Even in a small home, apartment, or dorm room there is always a way to carve out a cozy corner for privacy.
If your home is small you just need to think creatively. Is there a nook, closet, or corner of a room you could use for your personal space? You may need to rearrange some furniture and/or get rid of some things you aren’t using but I bet you can find enough space for a cozy chair or some big floor pillows. Add a soft push blanket and some lighting and you’ll have a perfect cozy corner to curl up in and read, knit, journal, or whatever you want to do.

What if you’re into something else though? Perhaps you need a little more room to do yoga, work out, set up an easel, or do some other hobby you have. Room dividers or shoji screens might work for you. In a larger common area like a living room, you can section off some personal space for yourself but the dividers can be moved back to make more room if company comes over or the family needs the space for everyone.
Another option is to take advantage of timing. If your roommates are night owls you could get up earlier and have your private time in a cozy corner of the common space when it isn’t in use. I found this technique worked for me when I had young children and a night-owl husband.
I purposely got up early and sat in my favorite chair with my coffee and a journal. I usually had about an hour to relax, wake up properly, read my devotions, and write in my journal. My favorite chair was in the living room where we had no TV, lots of plants, and a big window looking out into nature. It was my favorite time of the day and helped me to start my day in a good frame of mind.

When the weather is nice you may choose a spot outside. I’ve used this option as well. We lived in a house next to a river and from our yard, there were stairs going down to the river’s edge. I claimed my personal space about halfway down the stairs under a leafy tree. My morning routine was the same; coffee, devotions, journaling, but I sat on the steps and watched the sun rise over the river. I have wonderful memories of that time in my life and the peace I felt starting each day.
You might not have a river but you can find a spot outside that feels right for you. Perhaps a corner of your yard or deck, or maybe all you have is a small balcony. Add a chair, a small table, and items you love that make you feel happy and peaceful. This could be candles, pictures, art, or a multitude of other things. Just try to keep your cozy corner simple and free of clutter.

Your cozy spot won’t look the same as mine, or anyone else’s. That is as it should be. Your cozy corner is personal and just for you. So if you don’t already have a cozy corner take a look around and see your home with new eyes. Find yourself a personal space and make it feel cozy and peaceful. You’ll be glad you did.
