7 Motivational Suggestions on Self-Improvement

Written by:

Everybody has a goal of some type. Perhaps you’re hoping to lose weight before an important occasion. Or maybe it’s to stop procrastinating on starting that new hobby or project that you want to do and/or work on. Whatever you’re aiming to do, it’s critical to keep moving forward and looking for opportunities to better yourself.

Self-Improvement is a journey, not a one-time action or something to check off your to-do list. Unfortunately, saying it is simpler than doing it. You will run into hurdles. Making yourself better can be hard but you must keep going forward. If necessary stop and try something different or another way. By not giving up you will get better and grow along your self-improvement journey.

So here are 7 suggestions you can use to arm yourself.

  1. Set milestones that will allow you to see progress. Make them small goals that are easy to achieve. Also, celebrate every achievement in some small way.
  2. Every day focus on doing, and/or becoming 1% better.
One of the beautiful advantages of self-improvement is that taking one step to better yourself tends to bolster your motivation which in turn makes the odds of success even greater.
  3. Learn something new about the thing/self that you’re working on. Whether you get yourself a book on the subject, find a website that may focus on it, watch a video or read a blog. The more you research, or learn, the more motivated you become to achieve whatever it is you’re working on.
  4. Make it a life-choice change. In other words, you don’t have to achieve everything today. Some things take time. So if it’s a life change you want, then take it slow and easy. Don’t overdo it, because if you do you might burn yourself out which could lead to giving up. By doing it slowly with baby steps, you will feel better in the long run.
  5. Write things down. Keep a notepad and jot down what you want to accomplish. Jot down things you want to remember. Jot down what you did today that leads you towards your goal. Write down your objective for today, tomorrow, next week. Jotting down what you did will show you progress. Writing things down helps you to see where you’re going and helps you to be more accountable to yourself.
  6. If you are going to be motivated for self-improvement then you must be positive with yourself. This, for some, is perhaps the most difficult. You need to see and visualize yourself as a success, here and now, in the present. You may have to change your self-talk. For example instead of saying I need to… I have to…, change it too I am…Sounds foolish perhaps, but learn to focus on your goals as a thing you are doing today. Therefore you think ‘I’m continuing to get better at this so I am about to work on…’ I know you get the idea. Stay positive.
  7. Be aware of the people you hang with. Reduce, to the best of your ability, any time spent with negative people. Spend more with positive people. Other people can be a motivation for you, watch and appreciate the effort they are putting in to reach their ambitions. And if someone tells you of their goals or ambitions, be supportive. Motivating other people tends to reverse and motivate you. If you’re impressed with what they do, or their skill, let them know.

Writing things down is such an understated tool. I journal every day, and sure, to the outsider, it may seem like a meh thing to do, but the magic comes when I write and reflect on my day, and see how I can improve tomorrow. The second benefit is revisiting my journals years from now, and seeing if I’m on the right track in life. Anyway, thanks for this post!

Thanks for reading and commenting! I love the idea of looking back at your journals years from now. What a great way to see your progress over time. It’s too easy to feel like we’re going nowhere.

Amazing list and as someone who writes too about this topic I wouldn’t change anything. Number 4 speaks out to me the most and has been a problem throughout my day. I want to do everything where it leads to nothing and that just becomes a cycle that never stops. Number 4 should be empathized with more and help others to know that they are enough.

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment. 4 is one I use a lot too. Small baby steps, 1% changes that I can live with. That’s the way to go. Slow and steady wins the race.

[…] Now you know what you need to do. You perhaps even have some type of plan laid out and are ready to work on yourself whether it be personal development, self betterment, making positive changes, etc… The next step is to take action. Everything you researched and/or learned needs to be put into action. For some people this can be the most difficult part. However, once you realize you can do this, you can get past any procrastination you might be dealing with. Simply do something with the knowledge you have. It does not matter how small or how slow. Take that first step, even tiny steps get you moving forward, even 1% effort is better than no effort at all. Just remember YES you can do this! The first article I ever wrote and was published in our first month was about things you can do when you’re about to work on bettering yourself. Maybe it will help you get a good start on your journey. Motivational suggestions on Self-Improvement […]
